Bright paper, careful labels, and a lot of care鈥攖his holiday season was all about bringing joy to the families of our student parents.
The Office of Student Needs recently hosted its 4th annual Toy Drive, supporting more than 35 student parent families鈥攖he largest number served since the initiative began. The annual effort provides holiday gifts for students balancing college coursework with parenting responsibilities, reinforcing the college鈥檚 commitment to supporting student success beyond the classroom.
Each participating family received gifts for their children, and each student parent was also invited to select a gift for themselves. This year鈥檚 Toy Drive reflected a broader approach taken by the Office of Student Needs: one that emphasizes agency and choice in the services offered to students. Rather than distributing preselected items, student parents were invited to share their children鈥檚 interests and preferences in advance, allowing gift sponsors to provide items that aligned with each child鈥檚 age, hobbies, and personality.
This approach ensured that the gifts were not only practical, but personal鈥攁n important distinction for families navigating financial strain while pursuing higher education.
The Toy Drive was made possible through partnerships with the Assistance League of Los Gatos鈥揝aratoga, ASWVC, and the West Valley鈥揗ission Community College District Police Department. Partners sponsored gifts, participated in wrapping events, and volunteered during the toy distribution. In total, more than $5,000 worth of gifts were distributed to student families.
Through initiatives like the annual Toy Drive, the Office of Student Needs continues to provide targeted, student-centered support for parenting students. Community members are encouraged to stay connected with the office to learn about future opportunities to support and engage with programs serving student parents.
