Associate in Arts Degree

The Associate of Arts in French (AA in French) provides students with a solid foundation of the French language and of the diverse cultures of the French-speaking world. The courses introduce students to the basics of language so that they gain confidence in reading, writing, and conversing in the French language. Courses present students a variety of texts in different formats and genres to reveal the rich history, customs, and cultures of the French-speaking world. The Associate of Arts in French provides students with the necessary coursework to transfer to a four-year university where students will have the opportunity to complete a bachelor's or graduate degree in French. Depending on their entry level of French, the students seeking an A.A. in French can choose to start among the following courses: FRNC 1A, FRNC 1B, or FRNC 2A.

To be awarded an Associate Degree, a student must:

  1. Achieve a grade of 鈥淐鈥 or better in the major requirements.
  2. Completion of WVC or Cal-GETC General Education patterns. Students whose goal is to obtain a bachelor鈥檚 degree should complete the Cal-GETC General Education pattern.
  3. Complete additional degree-applicable units to meet the minimum 60-unit Associate Degree requirements.

Upon successful completion of this program a student will be able to:

  • Read and demonstrate understanding of the main concepts of a written text, such as newspaper articles and short stories.
  • Explain aspects of diverse cultural and global awareness relevant to French speaking countries.
  • Communicate about common daily topics in French.
  • Customize the mode of communication appropriate to specific francophone audiences.
  • Speak and convey information with accuracy and pronunciation acceptable to native-speakers of the French language.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills in relation to intercultural aspects and social global matters.
