ENGL 014: Native American Literature

Course Description

This course examines Native American Literature, from early oral traditions to contemporary poetry and prose, through an Ethnic Studies lens. Using Indigenous literary critiques, instructors guide students to consider the relationships between literary form, racial formation, sovereignty, and liberation. The readings for the course reflect the history and varied experiences of Indigenous peoples in the United States, exploring how Native American literary traditions operate outside the Eurocentric model, adapt to and resist settler colonialism, and vocalize the political and artistic struggle for self-determination.
