This program is a quick way to attain the knowledge, skills, and permit required to enter the workforce. California Child Development Permit Information

  • California has created a Child Development career ladder that consist of different levels of permits that pave the way for you to start out as a teacher assistant, become a teacher, and then possibly a director. The permits satisfies the Department of Social Services Title 22 Community Care Licensing requirements as well as the California Department of Education Title 5 child development coursework requirements.

Senior Guided Pathway to Teacher Program

Are you 50 or above? Are you looking for a new career? Are you wanting to spend your time in the joyful presence of young children? If so, then we currently have a grant from Carol S Larson Donor Advised Fund through the Silicon Valley Community Foundation to provide older students an educational pathway that can help you gain the knowledge and skills to enter the teaching workforce.

Within one year, you can become an infant, toddler, preschool, transitional kindergarten, or afterschool assistant/teacher. This cohort program, where students remain together throughout the whole program, consist of the following:

  • Complete 4 Child Studies courses 2026-2027
    • Fall 2026 October 12, 2026 -December 18, 2026: Hybrid courses In Person and Asynchronous (online)
      • CHST 063 Child Family and Community: Wednesdays 9:20 a.m.-12:20 p.m.
      • CHST 002 Child Growth and Development: Thursdays 9:20 a.m.-12:20 p.m.
    • Spring 2027January 30, 2027 -May 28, 2027: In Person courses
      • CHST 080 Introduction to Curriculum: Mon. and Wed. 9:20-10:45 a.m.
      • CHST 001 Principles and Practices: Day and Time TBA
    • Paid application fees to receive a CA needed for the workforce.
    • Paid work with young children at our West Valley Child Development Center for the fall semester to support what you are learning in your college courses.
    • Meet employers at our spring 2027 Become a Teacher Job and Resource Fair and find your next job
    • Participate in the graduation ceremony May 2027 with West Valley鈥檚 Child Development Teacher Permit Preparation Certificate of Achievement

ESL Pathway to Teacher Permit Program

You can learn English while going to college with our partnerships with Adult Education Schools. This is a quick on ramp to become a teacher and gainemployment. The Bay Area desperately needs teachers who look like and speak the same language as the children in our classrooms.

We use an IBEST model in which we provide support to students through co-teaching with a Child Studies instructor and an ESL instructor. Students will complete four courses in one year and complete the requirements for a child development permit. Students learn in the same cohort with their classmates throughout the year. 

Requirements to enter the program for Adult Education School Students

  • ESL learners at level 5 or 6
  • Complete a reading and writing assessment
  • California resident

Current ESL Programs

  • Fall 2025-2026 Overfelt Adult School. Program is full, and we are not accepting new students.
  • Fall 2026-2027 We are currently seeking funding for another cohort.
